Rating
- No one has viewed or rated my review. Why?
If you've just published your review, make sure you're logged into your account and refresh the review page. It takes time for members to read and rate regular reviews, and it usually takes a little longer for express reviews to receive a rating.
Keep in mind that member and nonmember hits for your reviews do not appear on your profile page for at least a day and sometimes longer.
- I published my review days ago and it hasn't been rated. What should I do?
E-mail a link to your review to one of the Advisors or Leads for the appropriate category for the product and let them know that your review has not yet been rated. Most Advisors and Category Leads have a contact e-mail address listed on their profile page for you to use.
- I'm sick of member 'X' giving me low ratings. How can I stop them from reading my reviews?
There is no way to stop someone from reading your reviews. You can update older reviews at any time, but the only way to stop them from being shown is to delete them.
The option to delete your review is located near the update link.
- Who is hidden and why are they giving me low ratings?
All members have the option to hide their ratings. Some members elect to only hide the lower ratings they give, so that they can rate fairly without risking being revenge rated or blocked. If other visible ratings are in agreement with the hidden member's rating, you may want to update your review with more helpful and on topic information.
On the other hand, some revenge raters or "trolls" choose to revenge rate with hidden ratings. It can be difficult to determine whether or not you have been the target of revenge rating when members hide their ratings because the possibility always exists that your rating came from an upstanding member who simply disagreed with the majority rate and chose to hide their rating.
Try not to get discouraged by low ratings, whether they're hidden or not. Read recent Very Helpful reviews written by Top Reviewers in the appropriate category and other respected members to find inspiration, and pay attention to the comments on your reviews from Advisors and other members to improve your writing - and have fun!
- I don't agree with the community standards of rating. What can I do?
Feel free to discuss your views on the message boards, or read up on various member advice pieces about rating standards.
Epinions lists guidelines for rating here and many members give their own unique take on rating on their profile pages or in member advice columns. Also, keep in mind that only reviews with an Overall Rating of Helpful, Very Helpful, and Show will be visible to nonmembers.
You are able to rate as you please, but remember that part of what makes Epinions.com great is the diversity of voices on the site. Members have different styles of rating and writing, but, according to Epinions, our top priority as raters is determining how helpful the review will be to consumers.
- How do I remove ratings?
There is no way to remove your rating entirely, but you can change your rating by simply clicking on one of the other rating buttons on the review page while logged into your account. Of course, there is no way to remove or alter the ratings of other epinions members.
- How do I change a rating I've placed on a review?
Click on one of the other rating buttons on the review page while logged into your account.
- How can I hide ratings I give out?
From your account summary, click on the "Site Settings" link on the left side of the page. From there you may change when your username will appear next to your rating. Do note that because hidden ratings are often associated with trolls and abusers, members that receive a hidden rate tend to not give it much attention since they have no way of knowing if it was an honest rating.
- How do I place a Most Helpful rating?
Only Advisors and Category Leads are given the option to place a Most Helpful rating on reviews. A rating of Most Helpful is difficult to attain and means that both alone and in comparison to all of the other reviews on the product appearing on epinions, the review is Most Helpful to shoppers making a purchasing decision.
Reviews rated Most Helpful by more than one Advisor or Category Lead may appear on the epinions home page. If you are stiving to write a Most Helpful review, read some of the other Most Helpful reviews in that category.
If you come across a MH rating by an unhatted member, this is most likely because they awarded the rating when they had an Advisor or Category Lead hat, or during the brief period when all members could award Most Helpful ratings. It is possible for unhatted members with HTML knowledge to rate a review Most Helpful, but this is frowned upon by some members of the community and you may risk being community blocked if you attempt to do this.
- Can I see a list of reviews I've recently rated?
You can hit the Back button on your browser if the reviews you would like to view have been rated or viewed during your current internet session, but a summary of your ratings will not be available to you unless you become an Advisor or Category Lead.
Recent ratings given by Advisors and Category Leads in their categories can be viewed by all members by clicking on the link beneath their recent reviews on their public profile.
- Can I filter the list of "New Reviews In {category}"?
The "New Reviews in {category}" page format was updated in November, 2006. The page breaks out Reviews and Express Reviews into two tabs, rather than using links. Filtering options are included as well. The member can filter the list of new reviews by rating and/or by those reviews which the member has already rated. The page shows reviews posted within the past two weeks, and the member can click a link found below the list that will display the reviews of the previous two week period, and so on back as far as the member wishes to look.
This new format gives the member flexible tools for rating reviews - you can search for unrated reviews, find reviews of a certain rating, look for old reviews based on a two week date range and more... there are lots of possibilities for how this tool can be used. Use it well!
- Can I see a list of comments I have left?
No, but you can find the review on Epinions in order to view the comments. If the review was recent, you can go to the appropriate category page, scroll to the bottom and click "Read New Reviews in ______" in order to view recent reviews in that category. Scroll through the reviews, or, if the review was an express review, click on the "Read New Express Reviews" at the top of the page with recent regular reviews.
If the review was not recent, you can also search by member name in the member search page, or by using the Google search engine to find the title of the review. To do this, go to www.google.com and type "title of review" site:epinions.
While viewing the comments on a member's review, you have the option to receive e-mail alerts when new comments are posted (including those you write) by clicking on the "New Comment Alert" button on the upper left hand side of the comment page. You may want to do this when you've asked a question in your comment, or are interested in the writer's response to your comment.
You automatically receive e-mail alerts when new comments appear on your reviews.

Web of Trust
- How do I add/remove someone to/from my Web of Trust?
You can add or remove a person from your Web of Trust by clicking the link on their profile page or on a review they have written. You can view a list of all of the members you trust by clicking on the "Web of Trust" link on your account summary, where you will be given the option to remove any of those members. The same setup exists for people you choose to block.
- What happens when I trust someone?
The trust function:
- effects an incremental increase in the trustee's rating power. Said increase is magnified in those categories in which the truster (you) is either a Category Lead or an Advisor.
- automatically places any and all reviews by the trustee at or near the top of the list of reviews on a given topic as viewed by the truster. It also factors into review ranking when viewed by other members or nonmembers, but the overall review rating, the number of ratings, and the presence of a TR hat are still the key components.
- adds weight to the trustee's Web of Trust. The truster passes along some of their power to people they trust, thereby increasing the trustees influence when they trust or block a member.
- contributes to the potential of the trustee being awarded a hat.
- Who should I trust?
There are many different opinions on this matter, and the criteria you use is entirely your decision.
Generally speaking, you should trust people that you feel are an asset to Epinions, whether it's from their reviews, ratings, comments, or whatever. Your trust should be a reward for that person's contributions to the site. Subsequently, it is important that you do not indiscriminately hand out your trust, such as trusting a person only because they trust you. Trust is for people that are trying to make Epinions a better place.
- What's the point of trusting?
Trusting a member will increase their influence on Epinions. They will have greater rating weight, more prominent review placement, a stronger WoT, and they'll be more likely to gain a hat. Trusting a person does not directly improve your standing on Epinions, but due to the interconnectedness of the Web of Trust, it will lead to a better Epinions when done with discretion.
- How can I hide my Web of Trust?
To hide your Web of Trust from public view, click on the "Edit Public Profile" link from your account summary. Uncheck the box at the bottom of the page labeled "Display your Web of Trust to the public" and submit the changes. Allow some time for the change to take effect across the site.
- What happens if I hide my Web of Trust?
Other members will not be able to view a list of members you trust and your user name won't appear on the lists of those you trust.
Several well-respected members on epinions hide their Web of Trust to avoid popularity contests on epinions, while others feel that hiding your Web of Trust is suspicious. The bottom line is that epinions gives you the option to hide your Web of Trust and that it's your choice and your choice alone to hide or display it. No matter which choice you make, you'll be in good company.
- How can I find out whether or not someone blocks (a.k.a. 'distrusts') me?
Although some members have devised little tricks that can help suggest who blocks you, it is still guess work. There is no real way to find out who blocks you.
- What happens when I block someone?
The block function:
- effects an incremental reduction in the blockee's rating power. Said reduction is increased in those categories in which the blocker is either a Category Lead or an Advisor.
- automatically places any and all reviews by the blockee at the bottom of the list of reviews on a given topic as viewed by the blocker. It does not otherwise alter review ranking when viewed by other members or nonmembers (contrary to a widely held belief).
- hides any and all of the blockee's contributions to the site (including ratings, comments, reviews, and message board postings) from the blocker. This function is enabled only if the blocker has unchecked the box marked "Allow me to view members on my block list" on his/her Site Settings page.
- contributes to the potential of a community block on the blockee.
Blocking someone does not have any discernible effect on the blockee's actions and capabilities on the site, for doing so would make it apparent to the blockee that the blocker had done so. Blocking is intentionally a secret transaction, so the site's interface gives no outward evidence that it has taken place
- Who should I block?
There are almost as many answers to that question as there are members of Epinions.
The most common uses of the block function are:
- abusive members. Also known as 'trolls', these members aren't generally interested in improving Epinions. They are likely to frequently violate the TOS in their reviews and interactions with other members. They may also unfairly down-rate or revenge-rate; they may also attack other members in comments or on the message boards.
- a 'no' vote for hatted members. While not everyone agrees that this is a fair use of the block function, it is one way to express displeasure in the job that a particular Lead, Advisor or Top Reviewer is doing.
- to hide a member from view. If you don't want to see any reviews or comments by a particular member, the block function can hide that member from view as described in #3 above.
- What's the point of blocking?
If enough members choose to block someone, the cumulative effect may be a site-wide or 'community block'. Members who are community blocked have all of their reviews as well as their user page hidden from the general public.
- Who can see my block list?
You are the only member who can see your block list. Not even Category Leads can see it. Category Leads can see the raw count of Advisors and Leads who block those members who are most active in their given category, but have no access to the names of the blocking members.
The block list is private so that members can voice their dissent without suffering negative repercussions, and so that members don’t feel pressured to block users that others have blocked. For more information on blocking, see scmrak’s article "The Last Word on the Block Button."
- How do I find out if I am community blocked?
Members who are community blocked are not visible to epinions nonmembers. To find out whether or not you are community blocked, the easiest way to do this is to use the "Pricetool Trick."
Go to your profile page, and in the URL replace 'epinions' with 'pricetool' and hit enter. If you are community blocked, your public profile will not display and instead a message stating you are community blocked will appear. If you do see your regular public profile, you are not community blocked.
- I am community blocked. How do I fix this?
First, make sure that you are really community blocked by following the steps above. If you are sure you are community blocked, you can take several steps to have the block removed and restore your name on Epinions.
In order to work towards having the block removed, you need to determine what caused the community to block you in the first place. Did you write offensive, racist or insensitive reviews or posts on the message boards? Are you inappropriately pasting links to your reviews in public forums or in the comment sections of others’ reviews? Is your profile page offensive? Have you been abusive off site, or are there other interactions you’ve had with the membership that have isolated you? Did you have a disagreement with a member that led to name calling or flame wars?
Chances are that the block won’t be lifted until these issues have been rectified, so try to figure out what the offending content or incidents are so that you can clarify your position or delete the offending material. Consider sending an email to one of the Advisors, message board Moderators, or other members who you are comfortable with and ask for their advice. Some members make their good intentions known on the message boards.
It’s up to you, but whatever you do, don’t create a new account on Epinions. It’s against the site rules to do so, and in many cases, members will be able to figure out what you’ve done and consider that more evidence against your case for community acceptance.
- What is a category block?
Some members believe that it is possible to be "category blocked." In effect, this means that a person has little to no rating weight in a particular category, as the result of being blocked by a certain proportion of people that frequent that category. Therefore, when a member places a rating, the review's overall rating may not change, even if it is the first rating.
Other members believe this occurence is partially a bug in the rating system, and simply because a member's rating does not have a visible influence, does not mean they are "category blocked."
- Should I reevaluate my Web of Trust/Distrust from time to time?
Many members continually reevaluate their Web of Trust/Distrust in order to give blocked members who have changed their ways a second chance, or to ensure that those they trust are still still trust worthy. Other members rarely reevaluate their lists. Your Web of Trust and Web of Distrust (also known as your Block List) is completely subjective, but it plays a role in ranking the reviews you see while researching products and in the Advisor selection process.
The complete epinions FAQ on this topic appears here. In addition, numerous member advice pieces have been written on the topic, but be aware that community standards regarding the WOT have changed over the years.
